
Remember in Sonic 3 when Tails would occasionally act as a Sonic transportation service and helicopter you around? In Sonic Heroes you control one of four character trios, and each character has unique powers that aid in traversing the levels. You can switch between your three characters at any time and perform a special team attack to take out large groups of enemies. I appreciate the ambition of Sonic Heroes, if not its execution. Different characters having unique abilities has been present in Sonic games since Sonic 2 introduced Tails’ helicopter butt, but Heroes allows you to make use of all the powers available to you at any time.
But the first time I saw that cinematic with Chaos wreaking havoc in Station Square as “Open Your Heart” played, I knew Sonic Adventure would be incredible. It offered gorgeous Action Stages to explore in Emerald Coast, Windy Valley, and Speedy Highway while each playable character offered their own unique gameplay hook. You can play numerous fantastic new Sonic games on your Nintendo Switch, in addition to some of the classic classics that were previously available on Sega gaming systems. Occasionally, too many sprites or particle effects on the screen will slow things down to a gelatinous chug, making it hard to recover rings after being hit. But in general, every level of Triple Trouble is a beautifully designed and brilliantly scored experience that merits its inclusion not only on the Game Gear Micro but in the pantheon of the best Sonic games ever made.

Regardless of precisely when they started, these conditions have caused development woes throughout the series and, as budgets and developmental baggage have accumulated, these issues have become increasingly apparent. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 feels like a night and day improvement over the original game. If Sonic 3 wasn’t split into two separate games, it’s likely that the end result would have been considered perhaps the best Sonic game of all time.
